The network has been designed with utilities like gas and water in mind. Because these utilities are often underground, under heavy covers, or in basements, their signals are much weaker than other IoT devices. To make sure those readings reach the network reliably, gateways need to be placed closer together, which means the network looks denser in residential areas.
