We’ll always look to use existing infrastructure first, and in many areas, we have been able to. However, in some cases it may be unavailable or can be unsuitable or inaccessible due to technical, regulatory, or safety reasons:
- Streetlights: Need to meet minimum height requirements and pass the necessary structural testing.
- Existing telegraph poles: Many are owned by BT Openreach and are designated for "passive" use only. We’re not permitted to install powered (or “active”) equipment on them.
- Electricity poles: Utility regulations prevent multiple utilities (such as water and electricity) from sharing the same pole for operational and safety reasons.
