Got our hyper-fast broadband and wondering how to make the most of it? You're in the right place. Let’s talk about how to get the best speed test results on your devices and why our higher-speed packages are perfect for keeping your home running smoothly.
First Things First: What’s Bandwidth?
Think of bandwidth as a big digital motorway. With Connexin broadband (up to 5000Mbps, yes, FIVE thousand), you have a super-wide motorway where loads of data can zoom along at once. This makes our higher speeds perfect for device-heavy homes with multiple users, it means everyone in your home can do their thing without suffering from buffering or lag.
Want to squeeze every last Mbps out of your Connexin broadband?
When running a standard online speed test, you’re measuring the speed from your router to the device you’re using, not the full-speed Connexin is delivering to your home.
Good news! The Connexin SmartHome app offers a handy bandwidth test that lets you see the true speed delivered directly to your ONT (aka, the small white box on your wall) – not just the device you’re using.
Now you can see the speed going into your home, let’s get the most out of your devices:
1. Check your device's speed cap
Some devices, even the fancy ones, are built with a top speed limit. Many laptops, phones, and tablets only support speeds up to 1000Mbps – that’s their max (but it’s still lightning fast and suitable for most online activities!). You can usually find your device’s maximum speeds with a quick Google search.
2. Switch to a wired connection
Wi-Fi is super handy, but it’s not always the fastest. Even on top-tier Wi-Fi 6 routers like ours, hitting speeds over 1000Mbps can be a challenge, especially if you’re not right next to the router. Walls, interference, and even the neighbour’s Wi-Fi can slow things down.
Is wireless your only option? You can still maximise your speed by choosing the correct channel frequency in your device settings:
- 5 Ghz is great for stationary devices near your router (like consoles, smart home tech and TVs).
- 2.4 Ghz works perfectly for devices on the move (like phones and tablets). Click here to find out more about choosing the right channel for wireless devices!
If you’re a gamer, pc user, or have a brand-spanking-new smart TV (lucky you!), you’d benefit from a wired connection using an Ethernet Cable for faster speeds and stability.
If your device doesn’t have an Ethernet port, you can invest in an Ethernet Adapter to squeeze every last drop of speed into your most important devices. Top Tip: Before buying an Ethernet Adapter make sure it has a speed limit that matches your device.
3. Choosing the right Ethernet Cable
Using an old or standard Ethernet cable? That might be a bottleneck. For higher speeds, you’ll need at least a Cat 6A Ethernet cable. Anything older (like Cat 5e) just won’t cut it. To find out what category your Ethernet cable is, check the cable jacket for ‘CAT’ followed by a number. Remember, your device’s Ethernet Port may still have a speed cap, but rest assured our high-speed packages will take your devices to their limit so you can get the best out of your tech!
